“Assim os Dias Passarão” (Renato Teixeira, 2018)
A different genre of translation to mark Renato Teixeira’s 78th birthday. Although he wrote one of Elis Regina’s most famous songs (“Romaria,” which I will translate here one day), he’s mostly known for sertanejo music. This wistful song, “Assim os Dias Passarão” (“That’s How the Days Will Pass”) is from his 2018 album with Almir Sater called “+ AR” (their first initials).
“That’s How the Days Will Pass”
December goes, January comes
Time flies by like a train
News on the radio, a friend is gone
After the mysteries that he always sought
Another one for the road, another end of show
To the sound of good rock and roll guitars.
Time brings its lessons
And records them in our hearts
Telling the story, that’s how it was
Showing the paths that will take us
As if a river running to the sea
As if rocks rolling in the river
That’s how the days will pass
New generations will come
Other questions, possible songs
Another world, other people, other dimensions
And at the scheduled time, somewhere
A star will come to follow you
