This song was the biggest hit from Carlinhos Brown’s first album, Alfagamabetizado (“Alphagammabetized”) and was featured in the soundtrack to the Sandra Bullock movie “Speed 2: Cruise Control.” Brown said it was the song that defined his career “because it was my first political-social manifesto dealing with caring about others.” And, yes, if one were to translate his name, it would be “Charlie Brown.”

The Girlfriend

This song is the beat for your dance party and we’re gonna enjoy it together
And everybody there’s gonna dance
Because in this cool, in this expert, in this swing
Gonna see, gonna dance, gonna shake, gonna sway, hey hey

Hey critter
The kid next to you
Has had a boyfriend
And fears commitment

Casanova
There’s always one next to you
They say she’s angry
But that’s not it at all!

Girlfriend… Has a girlfriend!
Girlfriend… Has a girlfriend!
There’s a brother
Glued to her side at the school door
But he doesn’t have a chance

Judge father
Takes her to the movies
With five other girls
What they always wanted most

Girlfriend… Has a girlfriend!
Girlfriend… Has a girlfriend!

Girlfriend!
