On her 62nd birthday today, a translation of the record-breaking children’s song from the Rainha dos Baixinhos (literally the Queen of the Little Ones) that is practically identified with her. The title of this song is a nonsense word, but it and the song itself really seem to encapsulate exactly what Xuxa was all about - dancing and moving and having fun! (It’s hard to explain exactly how popular Xuxa was - and how ubiquitous: She commands a children’s entertainment empire, she dated Pelé and Ayrton Senna, she had a fashion line, she has the highest net worth of any female Brazilian entertainer, etc.) Born Maria da Graça Meneghel, she was given the nickname “Xuxa” by one of her older brothers as soon as she came home from the hospital. And that “X” (pronounced “sh” in Portuguese most of the time) stuck in many ways, including her famous “Xou da Xuxa.” (Needless to say, every version of this song starts with slightly different shouts at the beginning.)
Listen to the song
(There’s a Spanish version too!)
“Ilarie”
Vamo lá!
Comigo, nas palmas
Ninguém parado, agora, vai, vai, vai
Lindo! Eu quero ouvir mais alto
Comigo!
Assim!
Tá na hora, tá na hora
Tá na hora de brincar
Pula, pula, bole, bole
Se embolando sem parar
Dá um pulo, vai pra frente
De peixinho vai pra trás
Quem quiser brincar com a gente
Pode vir, nunca é demais
Ilari, ilari, ilariê, oh-oh-oh
Ilari, ilariê, oh-oh-oh
Ilari, ilari, ilariê, oh-oh-oh
É a turma da Xuxa que vai dando o seu alô
Somente os baixinhos
Tá na hora, tá na hora
Tá na hora de brincar
Pula, pula, bole, bole
Se embolando sem parar
Dá um pulo, vai pra frente
De peixinho vai pra trás
Quem quiser brincar com a gente
Pode vir, nunca é demais
Ilari, ilari, ilariê, oh-oh-oh
Ilari, ilariê, oh-oh-oh
Ilari, ilari, ilariê, oh-oh-oh
É a turma da Xuxa que vai dando o seu alô
E agora só os papais e mamães
Vamo lá, baixinho
Vamo mostrar força, comigo!
Ilari, ilari, ilariê, oh-oh-oh
Ilari, ilariê, oh-oh-oh
Ilari, ilari, ilariê, oh-oh-oh
É a turma da Xuxa que vai dando o seu alô
Comigo! (Ilari, ilari, ilariê, oh-oh-oh)
Ilari, ilariê, oh-oh-oh
Ilari, ilari, ilariê, oh-oh-oh
É a turma da Xuxa que vai dando o seu alô
De novo! (Ilari, ilari, ilariê, oh-oh-oh)
Ilari, ilariê, oh-oh-oh
Ilari, ilari, ilariê, oh-oh-oh
É a turma da Xuxa que vai dando o seu alô
Mais alto! (Ilari, ilari, ilariê, oh-oh-oh)
Ilari, ilariê, oh-oh-oh
Ilari, ilari, ilariê, oh-oh-oh
É a turma da Xuxa que vai dando o seu alô
De novo, todo mundo, agora!
Ilari, ilariê, oh-oh-oh...
“Ilarie”
Let’s go!
With me, hands together
Nobody standing still, now, go, go, go
Beautiful! I want to hear it louder
With me!
That’s it!
It’s time, it’s time
It’s time to play
Jump, jump, swing, swing
Rolling without stopping
Take a jump, go forward
Like a fish go backwards
Anyone who wants to play with us
Can come on in, there’s never too many
Ilari, ilari, ilariê, oh-oh-oh
Ilari, ilariê, oh-oh-oh
Ilari, ilari, ilariê, oh-oh-oh
It’s Xuxa’s gang that’s saying hello
Just the little ones
It’s time, it’s time
It’s time to play
Jump, jump, swing, swing
Rolling without stopping
Take a jump, go forward
Lika fish go backwards
Anyone who wants to play with us
Can come on in, there’s never too many
Ilari, ilari, ilariê, oh-oh-oh
Ilari, ilariê, oh-oh-oh
Ilari, ilari, ilariê, oh-oh-oh
It’s Xuxa’s gang that’s saying hello
And now just the daddies and the mommies
Let’s go, little one
Let’s show strength, with me!
Ilari, ilari, ilariê, oh-oh-oh
Ilari, ilariê, oh-oh-oh
Ilari, ilari, ilariê, oh-oh-oh
It’s Xuxa’s gang that’s saying hello
With me! (Ilari, ilari, ilariê, oh-oh-oh)
Ilari, ilariê, oh-oh-oh
Ilari, ilari, ilariê, oh-oh-oh
It’s Xuxa’s gang that’s saying hello
Again! (Ilari, ilari, ilariê, oh-oh-oh)
Ilari, ilariê, oh-oh-oh
Ilari, ilari, ilariê, oh-oh-oh
It’s Xuxa’s gang that’s saying hello
Louder! (Ilari, ilari, ilariê, oh-oh-oh)
Ilari, ilariê, oh-oh-oh
Ilari, ilari, ilariê, oh-oh-oh
It’s Xuxa’s gang that’s saying hello
Again, everyone, now!
Ilari, ilariê, oh-oh-oh...
