“Para onde vamos?” (2019)

This song is part of the worldwide “Fridays for Future” movement. As explained in Ciranda:

The song “Para onde vamos?” (“Where are we going?”) is the result of a collaborative project that brought volunteers together with a desire to build a better common future. In that future, we expect that the beauties and riches of our planet, our shared house, will generously sustain the life of all beings that live here, without exception.

The project came to life based on the lyric “Where are we going?” by the composer Carlos Rennó, who characterizes it an “environmental song.” Its melody was composed by Beto Vilares. Big names from Brazilian music gathered together to flesh out this statement song. Recordings occurred in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Children from Projeto Guri also participated in the recording.

Listen to the song.

Where are we going?
Where are we going? Where will we end up?
At this crossroads, which road will we take?
How much danger from bad weather, storms,
High temperatures and disasters exist for us after all?

What deforestation or fire or floods
Have not yet flooded our sad eyes?
What ice has yet to melt,
To break the block of ice in the chest of those in high and rotten power?

How long will we go on without actually acting
Against greed for money that only destroys?
How many people, by the thousands, by the millions
Are going to die of hunger and of thirst, victims of the actions of other people, of other nations?

What will become of the world that we see, what world will we
Leave for the generations that will come after?
What future are we preparing, what morning?
Our activity or outrage today define our destiny here tomorrow.
