“Piruetas” by Chico Buarque

“Piruetas” (“Pirouettes”) is from the 1977 soundtrack to the children’s musical “Os Saltimbancos” (street entertainers or traveling players). Made into a film in 1981 with Os Trapalhões (sort of a Brazilian version of the 3 stooges), “Os Saltimbancos” was an adaptation of an Italian musical play, which in turn was based on the “Town Musicians of Bremen.”

Listen to the song.

Pirouettes
One pirouette
Two pirouettes
Bravo, bravo
Superpirouettes
Ultrapirouettes
Bravo, bravo
Jump into the stands
And fall on your nose
So the kids
Will ask for it again

Four somersaults
Five somersaults
Bravo, bravo
Nine somersaults
Twenty somersaults
Bravo, bravo
Rip the tarp
Kiss the clouds
Fall on your nose
So the teens
Will ask for it again

During the break
There’s a smell of pasta
And my stomach rumbles more than thunder
I want a plate
You’re crazy
I want a little
You’re a pain
Just a piece
You’re fat
I’ll bite you
You clown
Look at the audience tired of waiting
The show can’t stop

Twenty pirouettes
Thirty pirouettes
Bravo, bravo
Polypirouettes
Maxipirouettes
Bravo, bravo
Go up to the sky
Pierce the wheel
And fall on your bum
So that the fool
Yells one more

Ten thousand somersaults
A hundred thousand somersaults
Bravo, bravo
Maxisomersaults
Extrasomersaults
Bravo, bravo
Jump beyond the stratosphere
And fall where you fall
So the gallery
Dies laughing

Ow, my ribs
I’m already seeing stars
Bravo, bravo
Ow, my noggin
I’m not a good ballplayer
Bravo, bravo
Tarp… clouds
Fall into the hospital
One pirouette
One cavort
One somersault
I’m not a ballplayer
And the people
Raves…
Maxilollipop
Ultraviolet
Bravo, bravo!
