“Foi pra Toni” (“It was for Toni”)

One of the greatest soccer players of all time,* Marta was asked about her celebration following her second goal in an Olympics match against China yesterday. She told a Globo reporter after the game:

O 'T'? A comemoração foi pra Toni. Eu tentei fazer no primeiro no gol, mas a galera abraçou e não teve jeito, mas aí saiu mais um pra coroar

The T? The commemoration was for Toni. I tried to do it on the first goal, but the gang was hugging me and there wasn’t any way, but then I got one more to top it off.

Marta and Toni have been engaged since January of this year and are teammates on the Orlando Pride, a team from Orlando, Florida, in the U.S. In its debut game, the Brazilian women’s team scored five goals against China, of which two were by Marta and the others by Bia Zaneratto, Debinha, and the reserve Andressa Alves. That score repeats the best Brazilian debut in an Olympics, the rout over Cameroon in London 2012, and continues the script of the Women’s National Team which has won all its opening games in its seven Olympic Games appearances.

*Male or female: She holds all the following records for both: most goals in Brazilian international play (111), most goals scored in the World Cup (17), first player to score in five different World Cups (and first woman to score in five consecutive Olympics). She is six-time FIFA World Player of the Year. The goal celebrated above puts her two goals behind her teammate Cristiane for all-time Olympic goals.
