Tortoise, turtle, or terrapin?

JABUTI is a tortoise. (The word “tartaruga” is often translated somewhat interchangeably as “tortoise” or “turtle” but it’s really just the latter.) There are two kinds in Brazil: the red-footed and the yellow-footed. And curiously they give their name to some pretty unrelated things. Here are two examples, the first seemingly flattering to the tortoises and the second arguably something they do not deserve to be associated with.

JABUTI is also the premier literary prize in Brazil, having gone to some of the biggest names in Brazilian letters. Founded in 1958 (with first awards in 1959), prizes are given out in a wide variety of categories - including translation.

JABUTI is also the name given to a congressional amendment that has nothing to do with the original measure it is amending - or that may even undermine the bill’s original intent.
