On what would have been Cazuza’s 65th birthday, a translation of the Barão Vermelho song “Pro dia nascer feliz” (“For the day to dawn happy”) from their 1983 album, Barão Vermelho 2. (This blog has translated a number of songs from artists who left the world too soon and every time it’s hard to imagine them older than they were when they died. Cazuza is no exception.)
“For the day to dawn happy”
Every day insomnia
Convinces me that the sky
Makes everything infinite
And that solitude
Is claimed by people
Hiding and pretending
Every day there’s a time for night owls
Only lovers understand
Now let’s go
We’re barely getting by
For the day to dawn happy
For the day to dawn happy
The whole world awakens
And we sleep, sleep
For the day to dawn happy
Ah! This is the life that I wanted
The whole world waking up
And we’re sleeping
Every day is a day
And everything in the name of love
This is the life that I wanted
Looking for space
One hour here, another there
In the to and fro of your hips
Swimming against the current
Just to make an effort
Every muscle felt
Gives you back to me as a gift
For the day to dawn happy, right
For the day to dawn happy
