O Metrô

There are almost 100 stations in the São Paulo subway system (called the Metrô). A ton of them are named for individuals, but just for fun I’ve translated (literally and on occasion purposely obtusely) the names of some of the ones that are not. Almost all of these reflect either the name of the surrounding neighborhood or a landmark nearby. But devoid of that context - and translated word for word - things get a little odd.

Clean Paulista Field

Village of Beautiful Things
White Water

I feel compelled to mention the sonority of some of the stations, especially those whose names are influenced by indigenous languages. Perhaps the most beautiful and interesting of these is near the end of the Sapphire line: Itaquaquecetuba.

* obviously named for a brigadier general, but brigadeiro is also the name of a truffle that is very popular in Brazil.
