One of the most popular Legião Urbana songs of all time, “Eduardo e Mônica” is based on a true story and was made into a movie last year.

Listen to the song.

Eduardo and Monica
Who will ever say that there is reason
In what the heart does
And who will tell me there isn’t reason?

Eduardo opened his eyes, but didn’t want to get up
He stayed in bed and looked at the time
While Monica drank a cognac
In a different corner of the city, as they used to say

Eduardo and Monica met one day by accident
And they talked forever trying to get to know each other
A guy from Eduardo’s college prep program said
“There’s a cool party and we want to have fun”

A strange party with strange people
”I’m not feeling well, I can’t take another sip”
And Monica laughed and wanted to know a little more
About the little boy she was trying to impress
And Eduardo, kind of drunk just wanted to go home
”It’s almost two and I’m going to get in trouble”

Eduardo and Monica exchanged digits
Later they called and decided to meet
Eduardo suggested a café
But Monica wanted to see a Godard film

So they met in the city park
Monica on a motorcycle and Eduardo on a bike
Eduardo thought it was strange, best not to comment
But the girl had dyed her hair

Eduardo and Monica were not at all alike
She was a Leo and he was sixteen
She studied medicine and spoke German
And he was still in English short courses

She liked Bandeira and Bauhaus
Van Gogh and Os Mutantes
Caetano and Rimbaud
And Eduardo liked soap operas
And played table soccer with his grandpa

She talked about politics
Also mysticism and meditation
And Eduardo was still in the routine
School, movies, the club, TV

And even with all those differences
They suddenly wanted to see each other
And the two met every day
And their desire grew, as it had to be

Eduardo and Monica went swimming, took pictures
Theater and crafts and they traveled together
Monica explained things to Eduardo
About the sky, the earth, the water, and the air

He learned to drink, let his hair grow
And decided to work
And she graduated in the same month
That he passed his college entrance exam

And the two celebrated together
And they also often fought together later
And everyone says that he completes here and vice versa
Just like rice and beans

They built a house about two years ago
More or less when the twins came
And they fought for money, dealing well
With the worst that they went through

Eduardo and Monica went back to Brasília
And I miss our friendship in the summer
But they’re not going to travel this break
Because Eduardo’s little boy is in summer school

And who will ever say there is reason
In what the heart does
And who will tell me there isn’t reason?
