Por Enquanto (Cássia Eller, 1990)
In honor of what would have been her 61st birthday today, a translation of a Renato Russo song from Cássia Eller’s 1990 self-titled album. It was melancholy when it came out and now, in light of her early death, is heartbreaking. (It’s worth noting that in Portuguese, “forever” (“para sempre”) and “always” (“sempre”) share the same root word. So what I’ve translated as “forever always ends” could have been “for always always ends.” Perhaps more poetic…)
“For Now”
The seasons changed and nothing changed
But I know that something happened
Everything is so different
Remember when one day
We came to believe
That everything was forever
Without knowing that forever always ends
But nothing will be able to change what remained
When I think about someone, I only think about you
And so then we’re good
Even with so many reasons
To leave everything like it is
Neither giving up nor trying
Now it doesn’t matter
We’re going back home
