In honor of what would have been the 58th birthday of Nação Zumbi founder Chico Science, I offer a translation of the band’s 2014 song “Novas Auroras” (“New Dawns”).

Listen to the song

New Dawns
Happy about what’s not here yet
And saudades for what never was
Hoping for the best of the now
We don’t even have the before and we already want the after
And on the outside of our eyes
Clock hands even conceal the evening
Time already smiling for the end
Clocks wait for no one
Yesterday you wanted tomorrow
Today you want the after
I’m walking in time
Crossing the now
Dancing the new dawns

It hasn’t yet arrived and you think it already went
This is the spell of time
The incessant hungry race of the hours
Remembering those who speed up the changing instants
History and intentions
Without clock hands or guidance around the eternal now
Always running after something that’s never late
Gone with no satisfaction
A certain route
Panorama in the mirror
Window from which I see all
I’ve already seen this whole movie
