“Oração 18” (Luiza Brina, 2024)
I often post music translations here on artists’ birthdays, but I can’t find any reliable information on the internet about when Luiza Brina’s birthday might be (other than that she was born in 1988). So I’m randomly posting this beautiful song today. It’s from her 2024 album of “nonreligious prayers” called “Prece” (“Prayer”), the focus of her NPR Tiny Desk concert last September and has made her a favorite of NPR’s Lars Gotrich.

“Oração 18 (pra viver junto)”
Uma estrela encontra a luz da manhã
Um senhor espera o sol na janela
Eu te sinto pela primeira vez
Enquanto o sol não desce, a lua espera
Pra viver junto, é preciso poder viver só
Pra gente se encontrar
Pra andar junto, é preciso poder andar só
Pra gente caminhar
“Prayer 18 (to live together)”
A star encounters the morning light
A man awaits the sun in the window
I feel you for the first time
While the sun doesn’t set, the moon waits
To live together, you must be able to live alone
For us to find each other
To walk together, you must be able to walk alone
For us to walk
