Happy Birthday, Pitty!

Born Priscilla Novaes Leone, Pitty turns 45 today. In honor of that landmark, below is my translation of her song “Memórias” (“Memories”) from her 2005 album “Anacrônico” (“Anachronic”).

Listen to the song

Memories
I was killing my heroes bit by bit
As if I no longer had any lessons to learn

I’m a contradiction and making everything I say
Make any sense escapes me
I tried to get lost, pretending very well
That I never needed a place just of my own

Memories aren’t just memories
They’re ghosts that whisper in my ears
Things that I

I always give the best of myself
And I know that’s the only way that maybe
Something will change around me
I’m going to tear you to pieces
Every time I remember
Where you went without me

Memories aren’t just memories
They’re ghosts that whisper in my ears
Things that I
Memories aren’t just memories
They’re ghosts that whisper in my ears
Things that I don’t even want to know

Pitty ends the song with an echo of the last couple words “Nem quero saber” - literally “I don’t even want to know” which is definitely what it means in the context of the full thought about whispering ghosts, but when those three words are used by themselves, it’s more like “I don’t really care.”
