“Hoje” (Taiguara, 1968)
On what would have been his 79th birthday, a translation of the title song from Taiguara’s 1968 album “Hoje” (“Today”). Among the most censored musicians in Brazil, this love song almost seems to contain foreshadowing of the exile and hundreds of censored songs, as well as the commitment to social causes, that were to come.
“Today”
Today
I carry in my body the marks of my time
My despair, life in a moment
The pit, the hunger, the flower, the end of the world
Today
I carry in my vision distorted images
Colors, trips, unknown hands
Bring the moon, the road into my hands
But today
My weakened and empty hands
Search naked through the moons, through the roads
In the solitude of cold nights for you
Today
Men without fear carry into the future
I’m scared, I wake up and look for you
My dark room is inert like death
Today
Men of steel wait for science
I despair and embrace your absence
Which is what I have left, I live in my luck
Ah, luck
I didn’t want a youth lost like this
I didn’t want to be dying for life
I didn’t want to love like this
Like I loved you
