“A hora é essa” (Célia, 1972)

In honor of what would have been Célia’s 76th birthday today, here’s a translation of her song “A hora é essa” from her 1972 self-titled album. This was her second album, which had the same title as her debut album two years earlier and her third and fourth albums later that decade. (In the 80s, 90s, and 2000s, she did release several albums with other names.)

Listen to the song

This is the Time
I don’t care
That you have flaws
That you carry some
Belief or devotion in your heart

This is the time, I’ve lost a lot of youth
Making room for tradition
If my family calls, tell them I’m not in
If my family calls, tell them I’m not going

It’s not my fault if my world is different
If love leads us
Without distinguishing colors

This is the time, I’ve lost a lot of youth
Making room for tradition
If my family calls, tell them I’m not in
If my family calls, tell them I’m not going
