On this US Independence Day, here’s part 2 of “A trip to Brazil in 100 songs” from my friends at the Brazuca Sounds podcast. In March they released the first 25 for spring (US) / fall (Brazil), a list that included songs from the southeast part of the country as well as a couple of pan-Brazil songs. A couple of days ago, they released part 2, which in honor of the (US) summer travels up to the hot Northeast, including the states of Bahia, Pernambuco, Paraíba, Ceará, Piauí, Maranhão, and Rio Grande do Norte, featuring a lot of forró and other northeastern music genres. I’ve only translated one of the songs this time around, but I’m still pleasantly surprised to find that I’ve translated a number of the artists already (lots of links below!) and the list gives me plenty more to work on! Enjoy!

  • “Saudade da Bahia” (Dorival Caymmi & Tom Jobim, 1957), with shout outs to other Dorival Caymmi songs about Bahia: “O que é que a baiana tem?” (1939, performed by Carmen Miranda), “Você já foi à Bahia?” (1941, performed in 1967 by Astrud Gilberto), and “Coqueiro de Itapoã” (1954).
