Superb Sentences: Nélida Piñon

A series of beautiful phrases, sentences, and excerpts from Brazilian literature leading up to Brazil’s National Day of the Book on October 29.

From her memoir “O Livro das Horas” (“The Book of Hours” or “The Book of Time”), published in 2012: “Não tenho filhos, mas leitores, capazes por si sós de defenderem a civilização contra os avanços da barbárie. A eles nomeio sucessores de uma linguagem irrenunciável.”

I don’t have children, but rather readers, capable of
defending civilization against the advances of barbarity on their own.
I name them the heirs of an unwavering language.
