Superb Sentences: Autran Dourado

From Autran Dourado’s 1976 essay “Uma poética de romance: matéria de carpintaria” (“A poetics of the novel: carpentry material”): “Não nos esquecemos da verdade elementar de que quando um escritor começa a escrever, por mais solitário e ignorante que ele seja, nunca está sozinho. Atrás dele estão não só os grandes gênios e inventores da literatura universal (mesmo que ele não os conheça, o que é natural), mas sobretudo e principalmente os pequenos e grandes escritores que escreveram na sua mesma língua antes dele.”

We do not forget that when a writer starts to write, as solitary and ignorant as they may be, they are never alone. Behind them are not only the great geniuses and inventors of universal literature (even if they don’t know them, which is natural), but above all and mainly the small and great writers who wrote in the same language before them.
