“Comigo mesmo” (Lu Horta)
A fun and simple little ditty from Lu Horta on her 53rd birthday. The Portuguese word “mesmo” has a lot of uses. It can mean “really” and “even” and when used with an object pronoun it means “self” (e.g., “comigo mesmo” is “with myself”). So when Lu Horta says “consigo mesmo” it has echoes of both “with yourself” and “really with you.” (And as the opening of the clip below shows, she’s playing with the sounds of the words as much as with the multiple meanings.)
